Ordered raw oysters, appetizer fried oysters and crab cakes. The oysters were small and thin, worst oysters I've ever had. Crab cakes were good as it's all crab meat inside. The fried oysters were good because of the crispy crust. In a word. I liked their food except for the oysters which is a shame on them for their name.
Ate a leisurely late lunch/early dinner... we had steamed oysters, shrimp, crab legs - all were steamed perfectly. Also the crab and lobster bisque - YUM! The oysters casino was pretty darn good. We sat at the bar by the steamers. The staff is friendly and we really enjoyed talking to John (new John- i call him that because he's been at the restaurant less than a year). There was a shift change and John (old John- who's been there 21 years) took over. He also was interesting to talk to. New John made a few recommendations that were spot on. We left stuffed but it was worth it. Would definitely recommend stopping in and hanging out for awhile.
The food and service downstairs were both great, but I highly recommend waiting downstairs and avoiding the bar. The bartender was extremely rude from the time he greeted us. We felt more like an inconvenience than anything. We ordered shrimp cocktail. They were covered in slime, and became complete mush when you chewed them. When I asked what it was and showed him, his response was, "That's shrimp slime. They come from the ocean. Do you really think I would give you something that will make you sick?" I am 36 years old and worked in the food service industry for 16 years, so this was an obvious insult. An appropriate response would have been to 1. acknowledge that they were obviously beyond their shelf life, and needed to be tossed, 2. apologize, then 3. offer me something else. I sat quietly like nothing was wrong, and when we got the check, he had comped the one plate, but then said it was sad that I didn't like them, then chunked them in the trash angrily. That kind of behavior is completely unacceptable, and if it were my place of business, he would never work for me. Despite the great experience downstairs, we will not be back because of his bad attitude.
Love going here. Friendly, efficient staff and the food is very very good!! Sea scallops in lemon pepper is a favorite, as well as the crab bowl ... a lot of crab meat!! My husband had their fried flounder and loved it!! Of course we had to have 1/2 peck of oysters on the half shell ... YUMMY!
An hour waiting if you want a table. Bar seats are easy to get though. Also takeaway is available as long as you don't want the raw oysters. Tables on the first floor are all for 6 people but half of them were taken by 2-3 people. They should definitely cut tables into half to be more flexible.
Love this place! I make it a point to go every time I'm at the OBX! It's a classic seafood tavern with a "Salty Dog" feel! Great staff and the oysters are so fresh and delicious!!! The Barracuda Bites on the appetizer menu are a bonus - especially with a cold beer!
Service was good. Environment was ok.
